The bikes are alright, quite heavy though. The customer service is however beyond a joke. I tried the monthly subscription and it’s essentially a lifetime subscription as they make the return as frustrating as possible by agreeing dates for pickup and then not showing up!

I love these bikes and know them quite well having purchased +- 12 for my family over the years. Unfortunately they’ve gone from a small friendly independent bike manufacturer to a large soulless company on the back of extreme demand for bikes through covid. This has changed the way they operate and sell, which used to be through a network of independent local bike shops, to now as a major online seller. By doing this they have become competing sellers to their network of bike shops that actually indirectly did all the marketing for them, and helped build their brand over the years. Quite ruthless indeed!

I recently purchased a bike over their website and on receiving the bike I noticed a few minor quality issues that I could not accept, especially on a bike costing over £2300. I contacted them and asked if I could take it to Brompton Junction for a quick swop, only to find that they have a long drawn-out process for bike returns.

All online purchases have to be returned to their factory by courier at your own cost. Further, they suggest the package is fully insured which would increase the courier costs to over £120. The joke here is that they only refund £10! You can’t deliver it in person as they don’t receive members of the public at their factory, you can’t take it to one of their resellers, and you can’t take it to Brompton Junction. They also require 2 weeks to ‘check’ the bike to ensure it has not been used!

My advice : Don’t purchase anything from their website, rather go to an independent local shop where you can look at the physical bike, have a friendly chat to the owner/staff, test ride one of their demo bikes, make an informed decision, and leave with a product you are happy with. You might as well do this as you’ll need to have your bike serviced in the future and it’s much easier, and cheaper, to rather have it done at your local shop.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my Brompton bicycle as it’s size in a small flat and that I depended on the power assistance to continue cycling to work, not only because it’s financially and environmentally better but as a post surgery my ability to ride has been limited.
However, it has had a few issues, some that were fixed and others not and then further issues later all within the first 14 months.
These were issues with the gear levers/gears/lights and then the bike not working at all.
But mostly it’s the customer service I’m really disappointed in. All of it call representatives have come across very helpful offering all the support needed and continuously apologising, but at each instance of work being carried out it has be a constant drain on my time to follow up and find out what is happening between Brompton and the shop repairing. The latest instance has been five weeks.

There are a lot of good reasons why buy a Brompton as I did. Easy to manoeuvre, pretty light weighted, quick to fold, it goes under the desk and it has a rather neat design and colour.
Why am I thinking of getting rid of it?
I had an unfortunate accident and I would need to wait 12 weeks to get a piece manufactured and delivered (I live in London...).
The company is more committed to selling than caring for existing customers.
Many stores do not service/repair Brompton since getting parts is rather painful.
Last but not least I would need to pay quite a lot of for the piece and the repair service.
I am currently paying for public transport.. that here in London are not cheap.
Is it the massive investment for this tiny bike worth it? Right now I have not reached my return on investment. Moreover, by the time my bike is back on the road I could have bought at least 2.5 foldable bikes at decathlon, which are not the best but they do their job just fine.
Should have I bought one on the first place? 🙁
