I had read about this tree in a book ("111 places in Leeds that you shouldn't miss"), and I was really looking forward to having the chance to visit it. It lived up to my expectations: first, the walk to get there a was really a joyful one. There is a path from Aberforth suitable only for pedestrians, bikers, or horses. It is wonderful and peaceful 15 minutes walk, surrounded by trees and fields. I wish I could upload any sounds, apart from pictures, since the birds in the area were so chatty while I was getting there and coming back that I recorded several audios featuring different tweets and chirps and songbirds.
Nellie's tree is a magnificent specimen. Or should I say three specimens, actually, since they are cojoined to spell the letter 'N' at the bottom. There is a sign by the tree explaining its origin and its whole story. I am not surprised it was once voted as the best tree in the UK, and chosen among the best ones in Europe, as a matter of fact.
I agree with the book I read, although I would rank this tree much higher than 111 places not to be missed in Leeds. I'd say that not being too close (although not too far, either) from Leeds is both a con (a deterrent for those spending just some time in the city) and a pro (if you enjoy nature, but don't have the time for a long hike). I think that you could visit Nellie's Tree and be back to Leeds city centre in less than one and a half hours.

Slightly bias rating here as it’s a special place to me but is a beautiful walk. Unfortunately there’s not a loop unless you walk along the road for a while on the way back but there’s plenty of decent path to do a good walk and come back on yourself. The story of the tree is so touching and it does feel like there’s a positive energy around there. So worth a visit and what a great thing for a young man’s to do when in love. Plenty of dog walkers and others around.

Peaceful bridle path through the woods which takes you straight to Nellie's Tree and what a lovely story.... Vic Stead was courting a local girl and formed the letter N from beech saplings to represent Nellie's name and it has grown into what you see today, all that time after WW1. The Tree was nominated and crowned England's Tree Of the Year 2018 and the UK'S Tree Of the Year 2018 by the Woodland Trust. The bridle path is fenced off either side and though there are paths through the woods, they are marked as private. There is a public footpath across the field to Parlington Arch, but watch out for protective cows with their calves.
