Given the area's rich food heritage, I've always been amazed by the lack of fine dining restaurants in and around Whitby. And so, Restaurant Number 20 shines like a beacon amidst a sea of fish & chip shops and overpriced pub food.
The restaurant is cosy and intimate ran by a husband and wife team with an open plan kitchen, and this ethos spreads to the service and food.
The service was friendly and attentive, knowing when to be discreet and when to stop and chat. Whilst the menu is a small but expertly curated mix of seasonal and local produce, so naturally expect plenty of fish and seafood. The brill was the standout on this visit, but on past visits the aged fillet steak was equally delicious and expertly cooked.
What really makes Restaurant Number 20 stand out for us is the attention paid to the desserts. So many places - including those with Michelin stars - are often let down by forgettable dessert options. But here, it's arguable that the desserts are the stand out. With the Burnt Cheesecake an unforgettable experience that we haven't stopped thinking about since our first visit, and a must-have at every visit since.
An truly hidden gem well worth seeking out, and should top of the list for anyone looking for a restaurant for a date night or special occasion along the North Yorkshire Coast

Wow, everything was amazing from start to finish. Complimentary bread and oil to start, which was so delicious and fresh. The pumpkin ravioli starter with sage butter was one of the most amazing things I've ever eaten. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection, and the pannacotta and cheesecake were to die for.
On top of that, the ambience in the restaurant was cosy and warming, and the service was wonderful. So much love and care goes into the food; everything is curated and seasonally selected. Would highly recommend this wonderful local restaurant.

Amazing restaurant. Friendly welcome, great service (they asked some locals to give us a ride back to our Hotel).

Food was really well prepared, the kitchen have a lot of skill. I would recomend this restaurant to anyone passing through northeast and is looking for a stopover.

Wow another fabulous visit! The food is amazing & service second to none, I always say I’m declining the pud but I just can’t resist!. We’ve been fortunate to dine in some of the finest establishments but this is by far up there at the top of our list!!
Homely atmosphere with a slight boho vibe, bubbly & super friendly hosts and they remember you after each visit. I was lucky enough to spend my birthday there this year……. Highly recommend xx

Couldn't fault it.

+Staff were helpful friendly and knowledgeable and couldn't do enough for you.
+Small cosy setting (a terrace house downstairs converted into a dining area) in two rooms with an open kitchen in the middle.
+Open fire.
+Clean toilets.
+Menu is changeable as it is based on fresh fish and food deliveries. +No vegetarian options offered, but all meals are adapted by the chef on request.

Had such a fab night at nr20. Everything from the considered interior, cosy atmosphere, friendly service, incredibly delicious food made for a great experience. I had the pumpkin ravioli with sage butter to start with followed by the brill fillet with cannellini beans which were all scrumptious. The meal finished as strong as it started with perhaps the best panna cotta I have ever had. I also couldn’t resist a taste of the burnt cheesecake. Would highly recommend!

We had a fantastic meal here during our holiday in Whitby at the end of August. Amazing food, great atmosphere in an intimate space. The starter in particular was one of the nicest things we have ever had. Staff were by lovely, very friendly and knowledgeable. A perfect end to a week away.

A really great place. The owner provided exceptional service in this intimate dining room. The interior is decorated cleanly with impressionistic paintings on the walls while soft but fitting music plays as you relax and ready yourself for the meal.

The changing menu comes on clean A4 paper, probably printed recently, and never reused. A nice touch.

The food was high grade. Relatively small but nicely thought out portions of good quality ingredients cooked well. To start I had lamb chops.

A highlight was the panna cotta - perfectly done.
