There aren't enough superlatives to describe our stay with Amanda and Gary at Shoulsbarrow Farm. My wife and our 2 children (7 / 10) were immediately enchanted by the warm welcome and two freshly cooked cakes (delicious) and shown our well appointed rooms (both with ensuite). There was also a separate living room and dining room available making ample living space for our 6 night stay. It was clearly a labour of love given the attention to detail with carefully chosen furniture / homemade curtains giving a true homely feel. The lack of TV was not an issue with plenty of board games available and 50 acres of farmland for the children to enjoy. One of the many memories of the trip was the access to the animals with close supervision including tame bottle-feed sheep / Turkey / rare horses including the privilege of seeing Florence's (Suffolk) confirmed as pregnant. The main selling point of this wonderful place are the hosts making this truly a home from home...not to forget the memorable cooked breakfast including meat from animals reared on the farm. Thank you !

I stayed here for a night before meeting up with friends locally the next day. The farmhouse is beautifully presented and very comfortable. It was very peaceful and the location is just stunning: you can see the edge of Exmoor. There's a lovely little copse a short walk away which is a great place for reading or just contemplating the lovely surroundings. ||Amanda and Gary, the owners, were very friendly, explaining about the animals they keep over the dinner they prepared for me. Breakfast was very hearty. ||I can definitely recommend this place for getting away from it all: I can't wait to go back.

We spent a wonderful week at Shoulsbarrow. More like staying with friends than at a b & b. Amanda and Gary are great hosts, always ready to share their knowledge on Exmoor and North Devon and providing fantastic farmhouse breakfasts (really sets one up for a hard days walking!). The bacon, sausages and jams are home-produced and delicious and Amanda's cakes must soon become legendary! Athough within easy walking distance of the delights of Challacombe, Shoulsbarrow feels remote, a feeling intensified by the long, rather rough, access track winding upwards from a very minor lane, civilisation only becoming apparent almost at the last minute. Very peaceful (normally, the only sounds are the farm animals) and a real 'get away from it all' destination. No T.V's, so a good place to catch up on some reading and no excuse for not getting some 'not so gentle' exercise on the Moors or the Coast Path. In Challacombe, the Black Venus is recommended for super meals and the village shop for cream teas in the garden (bet you can't finish all the cream!!) and for just about everything else in the shop itself. (And it does sell just about everything else!).||For a memorable and relaxing holiday, Shoulsbarrow is up there with the best.

Although time went by too fast since our stay at Shoulsbarrow farmhouse in August 2017, we hope that a late review is better than no review! Our en-suite room was very comfortable and full of character and we thoroughly enjoyed the use the beautiful and comfortable downstairs living area. Our hosts treated us to a tour of their small farm and an introduction to their newest residents- several newly born piglets! Our hosts could not have been more generous in catering for my gluten-free needs. Every day freshly baked homemade gluten-free cakes awaited us, and I could not believe my luck in having my first ever home baked gluten-free bread to go with our sumptuous full English breakfasts! You may not want to drag yourself away from your immediate surrounds, but if you do, you will see just how close the farmhouse is to the treasures of the North Devon coastal path, Watersmeet and of course, the moor.

we stayed during our walk of the Tarka trail. We arrived very wet after a long days walk to find the log burner lit and cakes waiting! Yes it was July!! but it was just what we needed. Due to Covid 19 the pub was not serving food. Instead we were treated to a fantastic home cooked meal. If you like plenty of home cooked food and amazing proper puddings, yes plural, this is the place for you! No TVs but who cares, we played board games in the evening in our own lounge and for those who need to be in touch the wifi was very strong. Breakfast was as good as the evening meal. Maybe a bit off the beaten track for some but this is its beauty, well worth a bit of extra effort you wont be disappointed.

My friend and I walked a long way to get to Challacombe (kinda the point of a walking holiday, I know) and it was worth it. It's a bit off the usual route, but the local hospitality is excellent.||Gary and Amanda were great hosts. Attentive, but not too much. Generous and thoughtful. And we even had sausages and bacon form meat that they hand-reared. Seriously delicious breakfast.||We met the animals and learned about the different breeds they rear. It was another fascinating insight into the variety of Exmoor; an area of wonderful beauty and varied history.||The farmhouse is very nicely presented; more like a period home than a public B&B.||I didn't eat the cake that greeted us when we first arrived...and now I regret that! Another reason to go back 🙂

We keep returning to Shoulsbarrow - and no wonder! A glorious location high up in the National Park with sensational views in all directions. Our room was spotless with copious amounts of hot water in our en suite shower room. The house offers tasteful décor throughout with that lovely welcoming and friendly atmosphere that we all crave but, that only a old Exmoor farmhouse can truly provide.||Gary and Amanda always make us feel 'at home' from the moment we arrive.||A peaceful break is guaranteed, ensuring a good night's sleep and with the thought of a generous and freshly cooked breakfast to look forward to.

A perfect stay with the lovely Gary and Amanda who made us feel so welcome with delicious breakfast (home baked bread and their own produce duck eggs / sausages bacon) Peaceful farmhouse with stunning green views in quaint village. Comfy bedroom and en suite. Everything we wanted. A really great location to explore the rest of north devon. Will be back!
