A good looking Grade II building. Originally this was the Mechanics Institute built 1857-1858, designed by John Johnstone, with possible later alterations by John Dobson. It became the first free library on Tyneside in January 1870, when the Mechanics Institute was amalgamated with the Literary and Philosophical Society collection.
